About Food Safety Working Group
In March 2009, President Obama announced the formation of the Food Safety Working Group to coordinate Federal efforts and develop short- and long-term agendas to make food safer. The Working Group is co-chaired by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, and was charged with presenting recommendations on ways to upgrade U.S. food safety laws, coordinate food safety efforts throughout the government, and ensure laws are being adequately enforced. Participating agencies include the FDA, Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Commerce, the Department of State, the Environmental Protection Agency, and several offices of the White House.
